The 2021–2022 season marks a significant turning point in the history of the Cardiff Blues, who are now known as Cardiff Rugby. This change sees the club return to its original name and adopt a new logo to broaden its horizons both nationally and internationally, whilst remaining firmly rooted in its 145-year history and retaining the blue and black colour scheme that characterises its kits. Cardiff Rugby and Macron – the ‘Hero’ company and kit sponsor of the Welsh XV – have officially unveiled these kits, which the team will wear throughout the coming, and as always, challenging competitive season.

The new ‘Home’ shirt, in sky blue, is a crew-neck design with black trim and fluorescent yellow bartacks. The back of the neck is personalised with the club’s new logo, a detail that also features on the background. The sweatband inside the collar bears the team’s motto in two languages, Welsh and English, which reads: Nerth Trwy Undod – Strength Through Unity. On the chest, using sublimation printing, the Macron Hero – the Italian brand’s logo – appears on the right, whilst the Cardiff Rugby logo is on the left, over the heart. The Welsh national flag is printed on the outer back of the neck. A key feature of the new shirt’s design is the embossed graphic on the front and across three large horizontal bands, consisting of fine tone-on-tone diagonal lines. The home kit is completed by light blue shorts with black side stripes and light blue socks with a black top band and a white horizontal line just below it.

The ‘Away’ version is black and mirrors the home shirt in both design and technical details. The crew neck features a sky-blue trim and fluorescent yellow bartacks. The sleeve hems are also sky blue. Unlike the home kit, the logo on the shirt is in Welsh and reads ‘Rygbi Caerdydd’. The back of the neck and the sweatband are personalised with an internal label featuring the club logo and the phrase in both English and Welsh. The Macron Hero and Cardiff Rugby logos feature on the chest, whilst the Welsh flag appears on the back of the neck. The graphic design of the shirt is identical to the home kit but on a black background with tone-on-tone embossed diagonal stripes. The black shorts have light blue stripes down the sides, whilst the socks are black with a light blue top band and a white stripe.

Alongside the change of name and logo, a special third kit – in blue and black – has also been designed to fully celebrate the club’s 145-year history. Like the ‘Home’ and ‘Away’ kits, this blue and black striped shirt features a design with elegant, tone-on-tone diagonal lines on the front. On the back of the shirt, as a further nod to the club’s history, there is an embossed design of a skull and crossbones. This detail pays homage to Cardiff RFC’s first shirt from 1876.

The jerseys have a body-hugging fit and are made from Armevo and Bodytex fabrics, which, as well as being lightweight and breathable, ensure maximum durability.
