The Motherwell Football club, based in North Lanarkshire in Scotland, was founded in 1886 after the merger of the local teams Alpha FC and Glencairn following a meeting between the two clubs in a pub in Merry Street. 130 years later it would become the first Scottish club to be owned by its fans. The city of Motherwell was the heart and soul of Scottish steel production until 1992, when the Ravenscraig steelworks closed down, and this is reflected in the club’s nickname, the Steelmen.

Ambra and claret, the Well in the heart in every part of the world

The transition from sole ownership to fan control began in 2015 and the following year the Well Society fan group acquired 76% of the shares. Every Motherwell FC fan can become a member of the club and join the Well Society. To become a member, you can make a direct donation or invest monthly (from £10 or more). You receive a document certifying the percentage of ownership and you can vote on club matters. The spirit is to be part of something special and not just from Scotland, but from all over the world. The Well Society is therefore spread worldwide. There are members in France, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, China, Singapore, Australia and even South Africa.

Investing in the club, the young people and the social sphere

Being members of the Well Society means giving a future to a club that has made the history of Scottish football. Another very important aspect of the club is the opportunity to be involved in social and community initiatives, which is an integral part of the club’s fabric. Football is a powerful tool of engagement and inclusion and football clubs have the great power to involve people in a way that few other organizations can do. Return to the community what you receive as a club. For Motherwell FC and its fans this also means “Become Your Own Hero” Inside and outside the field.

…and the time when Motherwell won the Copa del Rey

Football stories can always be fascinating, and in this case the pages that tell them are rather faded because it is a story from almost a hundred years ago, in 1927. To be precise, it is not the official Copa del Rey, but a trophy that the then King of Spain, Alfonso XIII, had specially commissioned to reward the winning team of a tournament between Real Union (which had won the official Copa del Rey), Real Madrid, Swansea and Motherwell FC. The Scots won the final by beating the Blancos 3-1 and returned home with this Copa del Rey, so to speak, in a special edition. A success of which they are still very proud on the banks of the River Clyde today.
