Macron and international, top-flight rugby: an ever-closer bond which, as of today, has been further strengthened thanks to an agreement with one of South America’s leading rugby federations. The’Uruguayan Rugby Union, the governing body for rugby in Uruguay, has officially joined the Macron family. The agreement provides for the supply of match kits and the full range of apparel for the men’s XV, as well as for the Sevens and women’s teams. This prestigious agreement further strengthens Macron’s international leadership in the teamwear market and confirms the Italian brand’s status as a global benchmark in the world of rugby for quality, technical expertise, style and the customisation of garments, all specifically designed for the sport.
Nicknamed Los Teros Taking their name from a lapwing native to South America and known for its courage and cunning, the players of the Uruguayan national rugby team have, in recent years, attracted international attention as a rapidly improving side capable of giving a run for their money to national teams higher up the world rankings than themselves.
Founded in 1950, the Uruguayan Rugby Union qualified for the Rugby World Cup for the first time in its history in 1999, when it also secured its first historic victory against Spain. Diego Ormaechea scored the first try on that occasion; he remains the oldest player (aged 40 years and 13 days) to have scored a try in the history of the competition. From then on, the Teros consistently achieved brilliant results: in 2004 they won the Copa Intercontinental de Rugby, and four years later they were crowned champions of the World Rugby U20 Trophy. Undoubtedly unforgettable for Uruguayan fans remains the 30–27 victory over Fiji at the 2019 Rugby World Cup. In recent years, their first qualification for the Olympics was a significant milestone, thanks to the Teros Sevens’ victory over Chile. In 2023, they secured their latest and fourth Rugby World Cup victory, achieved in Lyon against Namibia.
The Macron Hero logo will already feature on the Uruguayan national team’s shirts from next July, when Los Teros will face France, Argentina and Scotland in succession.
“The Uruguayan Rugby Union is a successful organisation on the international rugby scene, and we are delighted to be embarking on this journey together. – he declared Gianluca Pavanello, CEO of Macron – A history marked by successes which, together, we wish to showcase through collections and race kits that highlight the Teros’ identity, their symbols, their history and their strong bond with their country. ”The Uruguayan national teams will have access to garments that are both highly technical and high-performance, whilst also boasting a sophisticated and exclusive design.".
“I am delighted to announce this new partnership between the Uruguayan Rugby Union and Macron, which means a great deal to us – he declared Fabio Magno, President of the URU – When it comes to rugby kit, this is an exceptional brand with a long history and tradition in the sport, and it will be supporting our teams. The national team jersey is a key asset for our national teams, and being represented by Macron is a great honour. Welcome!”.
