On the pitch of Gamla Ullevi in Gothenburg (Sweden) on Sunday 16 May, alongside the two women’s clubs that were protagonists of the 2021 Champions League final, Chelsea and Barcelona, a ‘Macron Hero” will also take to the field. It is Riem Hussein, who UEFA has appointed as the referee of this prestigious final and whom the Italian brand ’accompanies‘ with its technical apparel dedicated to UEFA match officials.
Riem Hussein, 40 years old, a German of Palestinian origin, has been an international referee since 2009. She played the role of the ‘fourth man’ in the 2017 Women’s Champions League final at the Cardiff City Stadium between Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain. In 2017 she refereed some matches of the Women’s European Championships and subsequently, in 2019, she was involved in the final phase of the Women’s World Cup.
Before becoming a referee, Hussein was a footballer and, as a striker, she played for MTV Wolfenbüttel. After becoming a referee for the DFB, in addition to several women's matches, she also directed men's matches and in 2015 became the second female German referee (before her, Bibiana Steinhaus) to referee a professional men's football match.
