Georgia Rugby presented the new jumpers for the Rugby World Cup 2023, where the ‘Lelos’ will be one of the seven national teams to wear Macron in the tournament, which is due to take place from 8 September in France. The Georgian national team will make their ’World Cup‘ debut on Saturday 9 September at the Stade de France against Australia, the opening match of Group C, which will also see them face two other national teams whose kits feature the Macron Hero logo: Wales and Portugal.

In the new match kits, the colours and symbols of the nation’s heritage are combined with technical innovation and high-quality materials, enhanced by a wholly exclusive design and meticulous attention to detail. The graphic feature of Georgia’s new jerseys is, in fact, the vine shoot motif – a symbol and expression of the national identity of a country historically regarded as one of the oldest wine-producing nations. Made from Eco Fabric, 100% polyester fabric % Made from recycled plastic, the new kits also send a strong message of sustainability and respect for the environment.

The ‘Home Kit’It is red with a V-neck featuring purple trim, a colour motif also found on the cuffs. The back of the neck is personalised with the national team’s colours and features the word “GEORGIA” in white, written in the Georgian alphabet – a source of national pride as it is unique in the world. Beneath the lettering is a vine shoot, the significance of which draws inspiration from a story as fascinating as it is dramatic: Georgian men, setting off to fight in wars to defend their homeland, would take a vine shoot with them. Should they fall under enemy fire and not be buried by their comrades, their bodies would thus become one with the earth. Within a few years, the vine shoot would thus give rise to a lush vineyard, which would simultaneously symbolise a ‘homecoming’ for the fallen soldiers and provide a harvest for their widows and orphans. The backneck is completed by the Macron logo and the inscription Designed in Bologna, to certify and highlight how each garment is conceived, designed and developed in the Macron headquarters.

The central element characterising the design of the home kit is the Georgian Borjgali, a traditional symbol deeply rooted in the history and folklore of this country. The Borjgali, also known as the Georgian Cross or the Sun Cross, is an ancient pagan symbol representing the sun, light and eternity. It consists of a circle with branches radiating out from it, forming a cross-like shape. In this case, each ray is formed by vine shoots to emphasise once again Georgia’s connection with nature and its land. The vine shoot, in gold, also features on the outer back of the collar. On the chest, in white, to the right is the logo of the 2023 Rugby World Cup, in the centre the Macron the Hero, on the left the logo of the Georgia Rugby Union. The shorts are red with white drawstrings, and the red socks have a purple top edge.

The ‘ version‘Away Kit’, which is an exact replica of the first shirt’s design, is entirely white with a purple V-neck and sleeve cuffs featuring red and purple stripes. Here too, the back of the neck is customised in the same way as on the home kit. The graphic on the front features a tone-on-tone rendition of the Borjgali motif, formed by vine shoots – a detail which also appears in gold on the outer back of the neck. The Borjgali pattern and vine leaves not only represent this country’s sporting excellence, but also embody the values of its history and traditions. The away kit is completed by white shorts and white socks with a red top band.
