A club’s shirt holds enormous emotional power, and the fans know this all too well. The fans of the Levante UD when they cheer as the ball flies into the net, making it bulge. Today, that excitement is matched by a commitment to, and a shared spirit of, supporting the fight against breast cancer. To mark the International Breast Cancer Day, to mark today, 19 October, the “Granotas” have chosen to take concrete action by taking to the pitch with a a special jersey dedicated to the “Against El CCancer”. Instead of the main sponsor’s logo, the following was printed on the chest of the 2023/24 home shirt a depiction of a mastectomy, showing a breast on one side and a scar on the other. This is a unique initiative in Spanish football, which aims to highlight how support for research may be the only way to defeat a disease that accounts for 35,000 new cases in Spain every year. Breast cancer was the most common type of cancer diagnosed on the Iberian Peninsula in 2023 and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths among both women and men.
Jerseys put up for auction to win an important match
You wear the shirt with a sense of belonging and pride, and that pride is amplified when you can help win an important match. Levante UD played a double-header, against Racing de Ferrol (winning 1–0) and against breast cancer. This is a cause to which all the players and staff at Barça have committed themselves wholeheartedly, demonstrating once again how sport – in this case, football – is an important vehicle for information, communication and engagement. The shirts worn by the players were auctioned on the “Match Worn Shirt” web platform” and all the proceeds will go to the’Spanish Cancer Association (AECC) in Valencia.
Being heroes through solidarity too
When a match shirt becomes the vehicle for such an important initiative, it is only natural to feel proud to wear it and to spread the message as widely as possible. For Macron It is certainly a source of pride to be working alongside a partner such as Levante UD in a struggle that requires a joint effort and ongoing support for research. A team effort that starts with the players on the pitch but in which the supporters themselves are the real stars, being directly involved and called upon to play their part in such an important project. #BecomeYourOwnHero, because you can be a hero through acts of solidarity too.
