On 23 May 1954, at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, the’Hannover 96 He became German champion for the second time, beating Fritz Walter’s Kaiserslautern 5–1. Walter, captain of the German national team, would go on to win the World Cup in Bern 42 days later, defeating the formidable Hungarian side 3–2. On the occasion of the 70 years since winning the title in what was then Oberliga, the’Hannover 96 e Macron show a ‘Special Edition’ jumper’, which will be worn on Saturday 16 March in the home match against Kaiserslautern, and which celebrates this important anniversary and all the players who wore the German club’s shirt during that thrilling season.
“It’s wonderful to be honoured in this way after 70 years”. These were the words of Rolf Gehrcke, the sole surviving member of that legendary team. The former midfielder, now 91, took part in the photo shoot to unveil the special shirt alongside current players Nicolò Tresoldi and Marcel Halstenberg, making no secret of his excitement and emotion at this historic anniversary.
Hannover 96’s new Special Edition Kit is inspired by the one worn by the German club during their final league match of the 1953–1954 season. Although red was already the club’s main colour for their home kit at that time, to avoid being confused with their opponents, 1. FC Kaiserslautern (who also wore red), Hannover 96 decided to play in a colour scheme that echoed the club’s flag: a green shirt, white shorts and black socks. A strong nod to the past, but crafted from an innovative and sustainable fabric. The kit is, in fact, made entirely from Eco Fabric, a 100% polyester fabric made from recycled plastic that conveys a clear message of sustainability and respect for the environment. Specifically, it is a fabric Eco Piola, which combines softness and elasticity with a distinct touch retro.
The jumper, with a crew neck, V-neck and a drawstring fastening, is entirely green. The back of the neck features a green label with the two dates 1954–2024 in gold, a laurel wreath with the number 70 in the centre and the inscription below Anniversary. The Macron logo and the lettering are also gold-coloured ‘Designed in Bologna’, to certify and highlight how each garment has been conceived, designed and developed in collaboration between Macron and Hannover 96 at the Italian brand’s headquarters.
On the front of the shirt, in the centre and in tone-on-tone embossed lettering, are listed all the names of the 1954 Hannover 96 squad who were crowned German champions. At the bottom right of the shirt, the years 1954–2024 are embroidered in gold, along with a laurel wreath featuring the number 70 in the centre and the inscription Anniversary. On the chest, on the right and in white, the Macron the Hero, on the left, in place of the club’s logo, the black-white-green flag of the’Hannover 96. The two dates marking the 70th anniversary of the league title are also embroidered in a matching colour on the outer back of the collar.
Lo Special Edition Kit, just like all the kits produced by Macron for Hannover 96, is available in the section dedicated to the German club on the website macron.com.
