Macron lands in Argentina’s Primera División as the new technical sponsor of a historic club, Vélez Sarsfield. The Italian company and the club from Liniers (a barrio of Buenos Aires) have announced a partnership agreement that will see the team wear Macron technical apparel and customised clothing for the 2025 season.
Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield, known simply as El Fortín, was founded in 1910 by a group of young men of Italian origin and owes its name to the railway station near the club’s first headquarters. The blue V’s from Liniers, a barrio in the Argentine capital, boast a trophy cabinet full of successes: 10 Argentine championships, 1 Argentine Super Cup, 1 Libertadores Cup, 1 Recopa Sudamericana, 1 Intercontinental Cup, 1 Inter-American Cup and 1 South American Super Cup.
The 1990s were undoubtedly a golden era for the club, as they won nine national and international titles. Under the guidance of Carlos Bianchi, who had also worn the Vélez jersey as a footballer, they won three Argentine championships and, in 1994, achieved the historic double of the Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup, the latter won in Tokyo by beating AC Milan 2-0.
Players such as Diego Pablo Simeone, Nicolás Otamendi and Thiago Almada have worn the Liniers club jersey, while coaches of the calibre of Marcelo Bielsa, Ricardo Gareca and the aforementioned Carlos Bianchi have been on the bench.
