A homage to the ‘Schnitzelbängg’ and hand-painted lanterns for the 2025 Carnival Kit designed by Macron for FC Basel 1893

A special homage to an historic city’s tradition
March 01, 2025

Every year, the city of Basel experiences three days in which the idea of ‘normal’ is suspended. These are the “drey scheenschte Dääg” (three most beautiful days) of Basel Carnival, an event that is so totally unique for its creativity, exuberance and unrivalled artistic expression that it has been classed as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. Again this year, FC Basel 1893 and Macron are paying homage to this extraordinary happening, which takes place from 10 to 12 March and occupies the Swiss city for three whole days with the Special Carnival Kit.

The set is dedicated to one of the characteristic elements of Basel’s Fasnacht: the Schnitzelbängg, which are musical rhymes arranged in short masked plays. Their mocking verses perfectly embody the light-hearted spirit of the Carnival and are performed by the songsters who write them. The comic Dr. FMH dedicated one of these special plays to this year’s special edition shirt of FC Basel 1893, and performed it on the stage of the Theater Fauteuil. Here the 2025 Carnival Kit was also officially unveiled and worn by a very special ‘model’: Xherdan Shaqiri, the number 10 of the “Rotblau”.

The blend of art, creativity and design found in the teamwear that Macron produces for its partner clubs is on full view on the FC Basel 2025 Carnival Kit. Thanks to the collaboration with the illustrator Domo Low, the special kit also pays homage to another Basel Carnival tradition, the event’s hand-painted lanterns. During the “Morgenstraich”, the traditional parade through the centre that takes place at four in the morning and heralds the start of the Fasnacht, the city lights are switched off, leaving the lanterns carried by the parade participants as the only form of illumination. These come in all shapes and sizes and are hand-painted with colourful allegoric designs.

FC Basel 1893’s special edition shirt for this year’s event has also been treated like a lantern, and is decorated all over with illustrations of carnival scenes, made by Domo Low. All the other graphic elements of the kit are hand-drawn too, including the Macron and club logos, those of the sponsors and even the names and numbers of the players on the back.

The Special Edition 2025 Carnival shirt is a long-sleeve jersey with a white-trimmed crew neck. The central body is in navy blue with a drawing of one of the typical Fasnacht figures kicking a ball. The right sleeve and side are in red while those on the left are in royal blue. Everything about the shirt pays homage to the carnival, with figures in white around the bottom, front and back and even on the sleeve cuffs.

The sleeves are further decorated with two phrases in Swiss-German: ‘Wenn me die scheenschte drei Dääg würdischutte, denn gäbt s 48 mol 90 Minute’ (If you were to play football all through the three most beautiful days, you would have 48 90-minute periods) and ‘Doo z Baasel wird gässlet, ych find s wunderbaar-s pfyfft mänge-n-e Säich, aber nie kunnt dr VAR’ (They play the whistle here in Basel and I think its wonderful – they whistle all sorts of rubbish, but the VAR never interferes). The Macron Hero and the FC Basel 1893 logo are both hand-drawn on the chest. The inside neck label is customised with the logo of the club, carnival motifs, the Macron logo and the words ‘Designed in Bologna’, certifying that the garment is conceived, designed and produced at Macron Campus.
Like all the teamwear Macron produces for the red and blues, this year’s Carnival Kit is made from Eco Fabric, a polyester material obtained entirely from recycled plastic, confirming the green philosophy and commitment to sustainability and the environment that FC Basel 1893 shares with Macron.
